Park and National Palace of Pena
The exotic Park and National Palace of Pena, a World Heritage Site known for its Romanticist architecture, is listed as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. While the foundation of this palace dates back to a chapel in the Middle Ages, the current appearance is mostly the work of German architect Baron Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwege. He mixed Neo-Gothic, Neo-Manueline, Neo-Islamic, and Neo-Renaissance styles to create this dramatic structure. Tour the palace to admire the building's restored red and yellow facade, interior design, and antique furniture. A fantastic day trip from Lisbon. A palace steeped in history with stunning views (of both the palace and the surrounding area).

This is one of my favorite castles. It's got the perfect summer colours and the location. It's totally worth spending a day at. Getting to it is fairly simple and there are lots of places to hike around. The castle is stunning and the grounds have some gorgeous vantage points overlooking Sintra. Would definitely go back.

Stunning castle with multiple gorgeous views of the surrounding areas. Worth spending some time up there. While most people might enjoy the views more, the interiors of the castle are quite pleasant too. Once you're done with the inside, head to the cafe for a bite and then continue exploring the garden grounds. Definitely a 3-4 hour activity or even more if you take it easy and enjoy the simple things.
