Oplenac, Topola

Visit the exceptionally lavish resting place of 28 members of the Royal House of Karađorđević at Oplenac. The church and mausoleum were designed in 1910, but couldn't be finalized until 1930, due to the Balkan Wars and Austro-Hungarian lootings; eventually, the officials replaced the stolen and destroyed objects with even more opulent gilded ones. As you approach, observe the luminous white marble structure, and step inside to see the exquisite interior, including decorations created out of 15,000 different shades of polished marble, glass, and gold. Take note of the 1,500 kg (3,300 lb) chandelier, which hangs upside-down to symbolize the fall of the Serbian Empire in the battle for Kosovo of 1389. There is a small entrance fee, which you pay at the ticket booth in front of the church.
