Create an itinerary including Royal Alcázar of Seville
Experience living history on a guided tour of Royal Alcázar of Seville, the oldest royal palace still in use in Europe. Built primarily during the 1300s, this World Heritage–listed site is one of the country’s finest examples of Moorish architecture, featuring a myriad of exquisitely decorated rooms, lavish gardens, paved courtyards, and sparkling ponds. Originally used as a fort, the site was reconstructed and vastly expanded numerous times over the centuries. The upper levels of the palace are still the official Seville residence of Spain’s royal family. When you visit, be sure to check out the room where Christopher Columbus’ journey to the Americas was planned. Advanced tickets are available online. Try to time your trip for one of many musical concerts regularly held in the gardens. • It's a must see when you visit Seville. But make sure you give it enough time. Depending on your level of interest to check each royal rooms and taking pictures, the palace, its upper floor (you need an additional ticket for it, around 5-6 euros) and the huge gardens will easily take a few hours. So it'd be best to visit it in the morning so it's not too crowded yet and you'll have enough time to see everything and enjoy sitting on the palace's sunny porches or simply sitting in the green gardens. You can buy a ticket online. Advisable to book it as soon as you arrive in Seville because the visit to the upper floor is super limited. I didn't get the chance to visit it, only the ground floor (it's actually enough for me). If you like to hear a bit of history, you can buy your ticket including an audio guide. Interesting to hear the stories behind certain royal rooms, paintings and carvings of the palace dome. Buy the ticket from the alcazar's official website. The gardens are children friendly. There are ducks and paradise birds walking around, also at the fountains. While walking through the rooms, it could be quite crowded to your children's liking.
  • The Real Alcazar is such a gem! We spent hours wandering through the palaces and gardens. The architecture and decoration are a blend of southern Spanish styles, with Islamic motifs dominating. I enjoyed the gardens even more, though. Our November visit was on on a pleasantly warm day. In summer the shady gardens with lots of shade and water features must be a blessing (as intended, of course). It's not expensive either! Allow plenty of time. It's big, and deserves leisurely consideration.
