For unbeatable views over the city's Old Town, head to the top of Grossmunster, a Romanesque church allegedly founded by King Charles I, better known to history as Charlemagne. Huldrych Zwingli, one of the leaders of the 16th-century Reformation, used the cathedral for his preachings against the Catholic Church, setting in motion events that eventually severed Switzerland's links to the papacy. Today, the riverside building serves as one of Zurich's principal Protestant churches, its two imposing towers arguably the city's most recognizable landmarks. Be sure to note the stained-glass windows by artist Augusto Giacometti and a 15th-century statue of Charlemagne in the church crypt. Grossmunster is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , custom trip planner Edition.

  • The Grossmünster claims to have been erected on a site chosen by Charlemagne. It took over a century to build between 1100 and 1220. If you look up at the south tower you can see the legendary king...

  • Amazing place to visit! It’s not a church with colored windows or even statues but all in all a part of Swiss history…… wooden stairs start mid way up ! Great views from top ! But scary for me 😅

  • This is the church with twin towers that is highly recommended by locals and is iconic of Zurich. Too bad that Swiss Travel Pass isn’t eligible for the church’s admission. The gentleman who sells the ticket was very friendly and polite. The church has a beautiful organ and the stained glasses are beautiful.
  • This is a beautiful church and a landmark of Zurich. We had a chance to walk up the tower and the view of the city was spectacular.
