  • Their "entrance" dome (reminding you of the Louvre) is spectacular. There is plenty here to suit all tastes from a galleon kids can run about on to (lots of) ship models to porcelain to paintings...

  • Great museum about Dutch sea history. Lots of beautiful models of old Dutch warships, and lots of original paintings from 1600s and 1700s of naval battles. Plenty of old maps and globes showing how challenging it was to accurately map out remote lands. Fascinating nautical instruments. The highlight is the replica merchant ship (called the "Amsterdam") in which you can go below decks. Museum is laid out in a very organized way.
  • The box is better than the content. The building of the museum offers a magnificent glass covered inner square. The exposition shows some interesting pieces but I visited many more interesting maritime museums, in Bremen, London, Venice, Barcelona. The tall ship is a joy for children, it gives a (vague) idea of the sailing context in the modern era.
