Panorama Mesdag, a large cylindrical painting of a seaside town, gives the viewer an impression of being inside the landscape. Stand atop a sand dune and observe villagers at work, fishing boats docked on the seashore, and houses in the distance. Along with the realistic painting style, the feel of the place is augmented by the sand and beach objects placed below the painting on hilly terrain, making the illusion more striking. The piece was completed in 1881 by Mesdag, his wife, and his student painters.
