Surrounded by mountain ranges and boasting a well-preserved city center, Salzburg melds culture and history.
Step out of the city life by going to Reiterkogelbahn and Waidring - Steinplatte. Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Residenzgalerie Salzburg and Sporer Likör- & Punschmanufaktur. Change things up with these side-trips from Salzburg: Almenwelt Lofer (in Lofer) and Zwolferkogelbahn (in Saalbach-Hinterglemm). There's still lots to do: explore the historical opulence of Fortress Hohensalzburg, examine the collection at Red Bull Hangar-7, pause for some serene contemplation at Salzburg Cathedral, and steep yourself in history at Old City Hall (Altes Rathaus).

The cultural, economic, and political center of the country, Vienna has developed from its early Celtic and Roman roots into a medieval and Baroque city, with an old town that was designated a World Heritage Site in 2001.
Schonbrunn Palace and St. Stephen's Cathedral will appeal to history buffs. Step out of the city life by going to Kahlenberg and Hohe Wand Wiese. Explore Vienna's surroundings by going to Therme Linsberg Asia (in Bad Erlach) and Zauberberg (in Semmering). There's still lots to do: browse the eclectic array of goods at Vienna Naschmarkt, wander the streets of Graben and Kohlmarkt, explore the world behind art at Belvedere Palace, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Votivkirche.
