Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Step off the beaten path and head to Centro Storico di Venezia and Scuola Grande di San Rocco. Shop till you drop at Mercati di Rialto and T Fondaco Dei Tedeschi. Change things up with these side-trips from Venice: Ferrara (Centro Storico Ferrara & Le Mura di Ferrara). There's still lots to do: make a trip to Piazza San Marco, contemplate the waterfront views at Canal Grande, wander the streets of Dorsoduro, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at San Giorgio Maggiore.
