Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.

The mountain town of Takachiho-cho remains a place of great importance to Japan's spiritual and natural heritage, and the point where these two things intersect.
Take a break from the city and head to Manai Falls and Takachiho Gorge. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Daikanbo Overlook and Mt. Aso. Step out of Takachiho-cho with an excursion to Kusasenrigahama in Aso--about 1h 5 min away.
