Founded when gold was discovered in the area in the late 19th century, Johannesburg quickly grew into a bustling metropolis, South Africa's largest city and the region's economic hub.
Lindfield Victorian House Museum and African Battlefields are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Discover out-of-the-way places like Horseback Riding Tours and Zipline. Change things up with these side-trips from Johannesburg: Mall of Africa (in Midrand), Nan Hua Temple (in Bronkhorstspruit) and Pretoria (Faerie Glen Nature Reserve, Sammy Marks House, &more). One of Africa's largest game sanctuaries and part of UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Program, Kruger National Park provides an immersive experience of wildlife.
Start off your visit on the 27th (Mon): tour the pleasant surroundings at Olifants Wilderness Trail, then trek along Wolhuter Wilderness Trail, then contemplate the long history of Masorini Archaeological Site, and finally see exotic creatures in open habitats at a safari tour. On the next day, trek along Napi Wilderness Trail and then stroll through Idube Game Reserve.
