Nestled between the Matra and Bukk Mountains in northern Hungary, Eger represents a mixture of historical discovery and relaxing pleasures.
Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Tokaj Wine Region and Eger Castle. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Mad Synagogue and The Basilica. Change things up with a short trip to Szalajka Valley in Szilvasvarad (about 36 minutes away). You might consider the city of Budapest, divided by the Danube River into two distinctive cities--Buda and Pest--to be essentially one large World Heritage Site.
Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Fisherman's Bastion and Dohány Street Synagogue. Visit Matthias Church and Shoes on the Danube Bank for their historical value. There's still lots to do: get a sense of history and politics at Hungarian Parliament Building, appreciate the history behind Heroes' Square, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at St. Stephen's Basilica (Szent Istvan Bazilika), and walk around Margaret Island.
