Arundel Castle and Gardens
It's good to be the King, but Arundel Castle and Gardens shows that being the Duke isn't half bad either. Established in the 11th century and owned by the Duke of Norfolk's family for more than 400 years, this estate features an exemplary English medieval castle and luxurious gardens. Take a self-guided tour through the castle to see opulently furnished rooms. Information placards give you context and history for most of what you'll find here, and the structure provides expansive views of the South Downs and River Arundel. Head into the Fitzalan Chapel, the burial place for members of the Duke of Norfolk's family and a fine example of Gothic architecture. Outside, walk through the exquisite gardens, the crown jewel of which is the Collector Earl's Garden. Admire the green-oak pagodas and the Italianate design of Oberon's Palace here. All of the gardens feature a colorful variety of flowers and other plants. Visit the coffee shop for lighter refreshments or the restaurant for a full meal. I was on my way to Brighton when I sighted this magnificent structure towering above the town of Arundel. I was so captivated by its beauty and splendour that I had to branch off course to see it, and it was worth the effort. Coincidentally there were some daredevils abseiling it's walls and that spiced up the experience.

The tulip festival in Arundel castle is an uplifting experience, such a wonderful arrangement of colours in a grand setting. The opportunity to wander around the walled garden with the fountains surrounded by a large selection of colourful flowers is highly recommended. And the cafe offers beverages and ice creams to enhance the pleasure of the visit.
