Trip Planner: Europe / UK / England / Oxfordshire / Oxford / Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology
The world's first university museum, the ornate, columned, and charming Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology sits on the campus of Oxford University and contains a collection of artifacts, objects, and documents related to a broad spectrum of history. Dating back to the mid-19th century, the building itself serves as a historical exhibit and features Greek Ionic architecture. The prime interest, though, lies in the facility’s various collections, which preserve pieces of Greco-Roman pottery, drawings by Da Vinci and Michelangelo, Stradivarius violins, Egyptian artifacts and many other such curiosities. Make sure you see the Alfred Jewel, a ninth-centry relic from the reign of Alfred the Great featuring a construction of enamel and quartz enveloped in gold. If you're traveling with children, check the museums program of activities for youngsters before you visit. A wonderful museum providing free access, events and exhibitions. They offer an incredibly generous access scheme to special exhibitions, for those on low income. For example, an unemployed ticket will be half price while the children go free. The roof restaurant is lovely in the summer months for a very special treat. I often take my international guests on a visit to the little know print room. You need to book access, but you can see the most incredible drawings, by some of your favourite artists, and up close.
Simply awesome. Such a vast amount of interesting and amazing things to see, that we will have to gladly return one day. Cafe with good food is a saver there. Reasonably priced as well. It makes it possible to break your visit into parts with well needed rest. Can easily be whole day experience or like in our case a reason to visit Oxford more often.
