Create an itinerary including Shangri La
Admire the Middle Eastern and Indian architecture of Shangri La, formerly the private home of heiress Doris Duke. Today, the site is known as a center for Islamic arts and culture, and you can see metalwork, mosaics, vases, and textiles in brilliant colors. Inside the house, you'll also see rare artifacts in various temporary exhibits. Stroll the gardens to see a collection of tropical plants, as well as a pool and water terraces that flow into each other on a cliff overlooking the coast. Tours begin and end at the Honolulu Museum of Art and must be reserved in advance. • Statement/ Acknowledgement of Place was very good to see at this museum. Photos don't do this proper justice- a real must-see, though the Mihrab wasn't installed to face Mecca, as it was originally intended before Doris Duke acquired it, and should probably be returned to its country of origin, as it is a priceless religious and cultural relic.
  • It is very hard to rate this place as it is one of a kind: no other place exists quite like this on planet earth basically. It is really an incredible place and you will enjoy being there unless you have some type of condition where Islamic art makes you unhappy (if you are neutral you will still like it). The collection of Islamic art here is unique and varied. You could say it is a hodgepodge, and it is true that the different rooms/wings have different styles from different parts of the Islamic world. But Doris Duke had excellent taste so each room/wing has really amazing and in good taste, and I think a "hodgepodge" of excellence is better than a more uniform and consistent choice of mediocre. If I ever go back to Honolulu, I will definitely make this visit again. You can *NOT* visit this place by going to it. You must buy tickets from the Honolulu Museum of Art and take the bus that goes from the museum to the estate and back. You get 2 hours on the estate. There are guides floating around, and they do give you a short introduction upon arrival, but you are free to wander about freely and read the signs (or not). Sometimes the guides may give an impromptu 5 minute lecture on something if there is a small gathering of people on some spot, but the general vibe is relaxed and "enjoy" instead of "come let me teach you about this" or "hurry from one lecture spot to the next". The guides were helpful and knowledgeable. The time we visited (August 2022), they gave us water and a small ice cream snack upon exit which was a nice touch.
