The attraction at Punalu‘U Beach is not beach itself but what it's made of--jet black sand formed from nearby volcanic activity. Framed by coconut palms, the beach provides a place for picnicking with restrooms provided. Watch for green sea turtles swimming near the rocks, however, you may want to refrain from swimming here--it is not recommended because of the cold water and rocky shores. Don’t get your hopes too high for this beach - yes it has unique black sands but besides that and some turtles to observe, there’s not much to this beach, especially since its quite small end to end. There is a gift shop near the car park.

We did some snorkeling but kept tripping over rocks on the way in/out of the water. Windy, and tons of waves coming in that pushed and pulled against the shallow rocky area. The sand is really hot, too. The black sand beach was unique, with lava rock and area for turtles to lay on the sand. I actually saw one in the water while trying to navigate in! However, some kids rushed over and tried to ride it....wish the kids were more watched by parents, along with the caution of strong tide. There is a shop with clothes and jewelry. As well as a lifeguard on duty. Bathrooms on west side with sand clean off area. Still great beach!
